Day 16 – 22 The Dampier Peninsula and Broome

It’s been awhile since we got a chance to update – we’ve either been too busy having a great time or in a no mobile reception area.

After 2 nights stay on Eighty mile beach we continued to the Dampier Peninsula, north of Broome. We stayed 1 night at the free camping site next to Willie Creek, then 2 nights at the Gnylmarung retreat camping site, just next to a beautiful beach. We continued further north to One Arm Point where we explored the Hatchery before finding another beautiful camp site called Gumbanan. Happily surprised, we learned that we could see the ‘Staircase to the moon’ from Gumbanan, meaning we didn’t need to get to Broome to view this once-in-a-month-wonder. You see the moon rise over the horizon, massive and red as a blood orange, reflecting in the low tide water, creating the illusion of a staircase.

The high and low tides are impressive with as much as 8-11 meters difference during a 6 hour cycle. In early mornings and late afternoons you can walk 150-200 meters out to explore the bottom of the ocean. During midday the tide is high and it’s the perfect time for a swim. But with caution, as we are in crocodile country now.
