Day 117 - 119 Walhalla

Walhalla turned out to be a great stop, and one where we did a lot of exploring, too. Walhalla is a tiny town with a population of 22 (not massive), but it used to be a thriving gold mining town back in the days and so there’s heaps of history and old buldings to see.

We started with a train ride along the Walhalla gold fields railway, taking us along the river and through the forest, across eight or so old bridges. Much fun! Being a Saturday and all, we also joined the Walhalla Ghost Tour. We met at dusk (about 8.30pm) and got a 2.5 hour guided tour in the dark to some of the most haunted places in Walhalla. We didn’t really see or catch any ghosts, but it was a fun and informative tour nevertheless (also a bit scary walking back the 2kms to our campspot afterwards, in the dark with only a torch).

Before leaving Walhalla we also joined a tour in to the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine. Most of the shafts are now filled with water, but what you do see is still impressive (and also a bit scary to imagine being that miner who had to do the 8 hour shift in the dark, on level 31, 900 meters or so below surface…).

All in all, a great little town (and a very pretty one) with lots to see and do. Very happy we found it on the map!
