Day 57 – 64 Atherton Tablelands

The time had come to cross the border to Queensland, and we started our journey towards north Queensland with a stop at the Walkabout Creek hotel (yep, that’s the actual Crocodile Dundee pub). It was a pretty cool stop and worth the 90 km detour.

The road to north of Queensland was even longer than we expected, but after a few quick overnight stops we made it to Undara National Park, where we stayed for a night. In the early morning we went on a guided tour trough the Undara lava tubes. Apparently Australia has vulcanos, something we had completely missed. And pretty cool ones, too.

We didn’t know too much about where and what to see in Queensland, and so our first thought was that Cairns would be the obvious destination. But boy were we wrong. After Undara we made our way trough the absolutly STUNNING Atherton Tablelands. Imagine green hills and mistly mountains (think of the shire, Lord of the rings), surrounded by rainforest and filled with crater lakes and waterfalls. That’s the Atherton Tablelands.

We found nice camping near lake Eacham, a crater lake filled with rain water and so clear you could have seen to the bottom if it hadn’t been over 60m deep. One night became four at lake Eacham camping. Partly because it was an awesome location, but mostly because we needed to fix the car. Again. A friendly local mechanic guy came to look at The Boss and quickly figured out the problem – we simply needed new front wheel bearings. A weekend and a public holiday later the wheel bearings were replaced and The Boss sounded like a boss again.

Some favourits in Atherton Tablelands:
1. The Bat Hospital – absolutly awesome! We got to see microbats and megabats up close.
2. Lake Eacham – perfect spot for a swim.
3. The Waterfall Circuit Drive in Milla Milla – because who can say no to waterfalls?
4. The scenery on its own is amazeballs
