Day 89 - 91 Fraser Island

It was time to explore the worlds largest sand island, Fraser. Fraser Island doesn’t have any sealed roads, instead all of them are soft sand – or you are simply driving on the beach. In fact, the 75 Mile Beach that streches along the east coast of Fraser is officially a national highway.

After lowering the tyre pressure we took the ferry from Inskip Point to the island. We got told to do any driving on the 75 Mile Beach 2 hours on either side of low tide, as that makes life (and driving) a lot easier. They say you don’t go to Fraser without getting bogged. Well, we actually managed not to get stuck, but we had at least one ‘almost’.

Fraser was a beautiful destination on its own, and doing some 4 wheel driving on sand made it even better. We enjoyed 3 days and 2 nights on the island, and got the Zone 3 Winnam camping area all to ourselves, a good time to visit it seems.

A snapshot of the places we visited on Fraser; Lake McKenzie, Indian Head, Champagne Pools, Lake Allom, Maheno’s Shipwreck, Eli Creek and Lake Wabby. All places well worth a visit but Lake McKenzie, Indian Head and Eli Creek were the absolute favorites. The shipwreck, from World War 2, was also pretty cool.
