Day 114 - 116 Great Alpine Road to Lakes Entrance

We crossed the border to Victoria and aimed for the Great Alpine Road to continue our Aussie alpine streak. With the New South Wales’ Alpine Way fresh in mind we had big hopes for the Great Alpine Road. But unfortunately, it wasn’t as good as the Snowy Mountains. Maybe because all the snow was gone here, revealing a large amount of dead trees (due to bushfires). Don’t get us wrong, the Great Alpine Road was still pretty great, it wasn’t just as impressive as the Alpine Way.

Victoria is no where near as big as some of the other states and territories and so we could quickly tell – by driving just two days and with just a few overnight stops we had made it half way through the state (or so it felt). We stopped one night in the little town Omeo before finishing the Great Alpine Road (gosh it was cold there, below 5 degrees at night, still only spring in Victoria). After that we stopped at Lakes Entrance. It was windy and cold so a semi short beach walk was all we managed to explore (as well as browsing at a secondhand bookstore and some yummy ice cream of course) before heading to a free bush camp nearby.

Unsure what our next stop would be we had a look at the map and in our travel book (this is normally how we decide our next move). We decided that the little gold mining town Walhalla would be it (hey, how could we not?).
