Day 157 – 158 Nullarbor Plains
Our first drive in the New Year would be the one across the Nullarbor. Nullarbor, latin for “no trees”, is a massive plateau where there’s nothing but shrubs and bushes. It stretches 1100km from SA to WA and, as you can imagine, the road is long and not that exciting. However, the few lookouts over the Great Australian Bight and the Bunda Cliffs are quite something, equally good as the Great Ocean Road lookouts even. After crossing the WA border and surviving the very strict WA quarantine checking point (although one jar of honey shorter), it was time to find a campsite for the night. Madura Pass Lookout fit the bill (upon recommendation from fellow travellers in Fowlers Bay). With a beautiful morning view over the Roe Plains, it was a great place to wake up before starting the drive on the Nullarbor once more. This day we travelled Australias longest straight road; 146.6km straight ahead (a cup of very strong coffee is to recommend before you start driving). After the Nullarbor, we made it to Norseman and continued on towards Esperance.
