Day 170 – 171 Pemberton Area

From Bremer Bay we drove to Albany and did a pit stop for grocery shopping and had yummy fish/squid & chips at the Squid Shack. We continued on towards Pemberton and its famous Karri tree forest – also known as the forest of the Giants. The Karri trees are massive and one of the tallest in the world.

Anna was insisitng on some forest camping, and so we stayed the night at the bush camping area at Big Brook Arboretum, surrounded by karri trees. Next day was time for some sightseeing. We started with a stroll around the pretty Big Brook Dam and then a visit to Pemberton itself where we also had lunch.

Eager to get to the Dave Evans Bicentennial tree, Warren National Park, we left Pemberton town centre pretty quickly. Dave Evans Bicentennial tree is a 75m tall karri tree (and that’s not short!). If you wanna reach the top, you can do so by the help of 185 pegs that has been drilled into the tree. Safety net? Naw, forget about that. It actually took us 3 tries before we made it up to the top (because if you have the slightest fear of hights it is scary as hell, and it probably is scary as hell even if you don’t have a fear of hights) but we made it! The view from the top was amazing, as you get a 365 degree view from above the tree tops. Worth every peg we climed.

We also did a quick stop at the Beedelup Falls, not much of a water fall but the hanging bridge was good fun.

We found a great bush camping not far from the climbing tree, Drafty’s camp, also in the Warren National Park. Again we got to spend a night surrounded by the beautiful giant karri tree forest.
